Amazon is betting €33.7 billion on Spain’s future—will this tech gold rush transform Aragón into Europe’s next digital powerhouse?
Amazon will invest €33.7 billion in Spain through 2035, adding to its €15.7 billion 2024 commitment. David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, stated:
"This new infrastructure investment reinforces our long-term commitment and will be pivotal for the country’s digital and economic future."
The AWS Europe (Spain) Region in Aragón is projected to contribute €31.7 billion to Spain’s GDP and support 29,900 annual jobs. Of these, 1,800 direct jobs will come from new supply chain facilities, including a server manufacturing plant.

Tangible benefits are already emerging. At Finca El Forado, an olive farm in Aragón, AWS-powered smart irrigation systems have reduced water usage by 50% annually. Miguel Angel Ferrer, the farm’s operator, noted:
"AWS-powered smart irrigation has changed everything... saving up to 50% of our water annually."
Amazon also pledged €30 million in community programs through 2035, including robotics training for 7,400 students. Ángel Bernad of ALAN COMMISSIONING, a local infrastructure firm, highlighted the ripple effect:
"The arrival of AWS infrastructure allowed us to specialize in data center services."
Renewable energy anchors the project: 100% of AWS data centers in Aragón run on renewables since 2022, with 100 solar/wind projects planned nationwide. Yet questions linger: Can this model scale sustainably, or will it prioritize corporate gains over local needs?
