Minecraft's inventory is gone, at least for one day. The game's annual April Fool's snapshot, dubbed Herdcraft, removes the traditional menu and scatters items across the world as commandable entities tied with leads.
"The inventory is gone, and it's gone for good," Mojang writes in its joke but functional patch notes. "Now, the world is your inventory."
Items no longer sit trapped in a menu. Instead, each block, tool, or resource roams freely and responds to player commands via a lead, much like taming a wolf. Mojang's YouTube trailer shows the mechanic in action: players gather resources by directing their items, or send sentient ingots to battle the Ender Dragon while the player watches.
"Let the herding begin!" the trailer concludes.
Players on Reddit have already embraced the concept. One user noted that Mojang "finally added a summoner class" to Minecraft, even if only as a prank. Another suggested, "This could be the framework for pet update." Some see potential for movable chests or commandable pets in future official updates.
The snapshot arrives as Mojang shifts toward smaller, more frequent updates like Tiny Takeover and the upcoming Chaos Cubed. A lead developer described this approach as "more sustainable," noting "There's always another one right around the corner."
Past April Fool's additions, such as the 2024 potato dimension, have not persisted beyond their snapshot windows. Herdcraft faces the same uncertainty: it is a joke update with no confirmation it will become permanent. For now, players can experiment with commanding their inventory, but whether the mechanic evolves into an official feature remains an open question.
