Wikipedia celebrated its 25th anniversary on January 15th, 2024, having grown from 100 pages to 65 million articles with 15 billion monthly views.
The Wikimedia Foundation released a mini docuseries highlighting volunteer editors, including 'Hurricane Hank' (contributed to Hurricane Katrina page), Indian doctor Netha (combated pandemic misinformation), and Gabe (advocates for accurate representation of Black figures).
A digital 'time capsule' includes a recording from founder Jimmy Wales and revisits historical moments like server crashes after Michael Jackson’s 2009 death.
"Against all odds, Wikipedia has grown to become the backbone of knowledge on the internet today," says Jimmy Wales.
The site faces political accusations of bias but remains accessed by 1.5 billion unique devices monthly.
