Waymo’s Robotaxis Arrive in Miami, But Can They Navigate the Hurdles Ahead?
Waymo’s robotaxis are now rolling in Miami—but the road ahead is anything but smooth.
The company’s autonomous vehicle service is available to 10,000 residents on a waitlist within a 60-square-mile area. Access will expand to Miami International Airport “soon,” though no timeline was specified.
Waymo’s phased rollout strategy includes employee testing, public access, and gradual expansion to freeways and new cities.
Waymo plans to launch in 11 additional cities—Dallas, Denver, Detroit, and others—by 2026 using Jaguar I-Pace and Zeekr RT vans. Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said:
"By the end of 2026, you should expect us to be offering 1 million trips per week."
However, the company faces regulatory and public challenges. Traffic congestion complaints, unresolved school bus safety issues, and an NHTSA investigation are complicating progress.
A voluntary software recall was issued for school bus incidents, but new videos show Waymo vehicles still illegally passing stopped buses.
