SwitchBot’s New Lock Vision Series: Smarter Than Your Fingerprint?

SwitchBot’s Lock Vision series offers facial recognition for smart locks but raises privacy questions. Learn about features, security, and release details.

SwitchBot Lock Vision smart lock with facial recognition technology

SwitchBot's new facial recognition locks let you unlock doors with a glance—but will your privacy keep up with your convenience?

The Lock Vision series introduces a built-in smart deadbolt using 3D facial recognition for 'near-instant unlocking.' Unlike retrofitting models, this is the first SwitchBot lock designed to replace traditional hardware entirely.

The base model supports face/passcode/NFC/geofencing, while the Pro adds fingerprint and palm-vein scanning. Both models include Matter-over-Wi-Fi integration for compatibility with Apple Home, a 6-month rechargeable battery, and a 5-year emergency backup battery.

The built-in design eliminates the need for existing lock modifications, but retrofitting options remain popular for users who prefer minimal structural changes.

Security experts caution that biometric data—especially facial and palm-vein scans—requires robust encryption to prevent breaches. The inclusion of Matter-over-Wi-Fi positions SwitchBot to compete with Apple’s ecosystem, though pricing and availability remain unannounced as of CES 2026. Analysts speculate this delay could reflect waiting for Apple’s final Matter specification approval.
