Sphere’s Smaller DC Tech Palace: 6,000 Seats, Wind, and a $200M Funding Gamble

Sphere's mini-Sphere concept with LED exosphere and 4D environmental effects

A 6,000-seat tech marvel with wind, fog, and ceiling-dropping apples is coming to DC’s backyard—if Maryland’s politicians sign off.

Sphere Entertainment plans a second US Sphere in Maryland’s National Harbor, a smaller 6,000-seat venue compared to Las Vegas’ 17,000-seat original. The mini-Sphere will feature a 16,000x16,000 pixel wraparound screen, immersive sound, haptic seating, and 4D environmental effects (e.g., wind, fog, scent).

Construction depends on $200 million in state/local incentives and approvals, with potential to generate millions in revenue and 4,700 jobs. Abu Dhabi’s Sphere (announced October 2024) will match Las Vegas’ scale, while Maryland’s is the first of a new "mini-Sphere" format.

The venue’s exterior LED "exosphere" will replicate the Las Vegas Sphere’s branded/artistic displays.
