Ricoh’s GR IV Monochrome: A $700 Premium for a Camera That Can’t Shoot Color
Ricoh just priced its GR IV Monochrome at $700 over the standard model — but is it worth the premium for a camera that can’t shoot color?
The Ricoh GR IV Monochrome costs $2,199.95, a $700 premium over the standard GR IV. It features an APS-C sensor with no color filter, an ISO range of 160–409,600, and a built-in red filter that doubles as a two-stop neutral density (ND) filter.
Aesthetic differences include a blacked-out logo, matte finish, and a white LED light.
Leica’s Q3 Monochrom and M11 Monochrom models retail for $7,790 and $10,160, respectively, before lenses.
The GR IV Monochrome’s niche design caters to photographers who prioritize monochrome imaging. Its red filter enhances contrast in skin tones and skies while reducing flare.
The ISO range supports low-light performance, but the lack of color capability limits its appeal to a specific subset of enthusiasts.
