Rec Room Shuts Down June 1 After a Decade and 150 Million Players

Rec Room Shuts Down June 1 After a Decade and 150 Million Players

Rec Room will go dark on June 1, 2026 at noon Pacific time. After a decade of operation and 150 million players, the company that built one of the most populated social VR platforms in the world said it could not find a path to profitability.

The numbers are not small. Players made over half a billion friends on the platform. Collectively, people around the world spent a cumulative 68,000 years inside Rec Room. The top user-generated rooms each saw over 500 years of playtime. Millions of people were still logging in every month when the decision was made.

None of it was enough.

"Despite this popularity, we never quite figured out how to make Rec Room a sustainably profitable business," the company wrote in its announcement. "Our costs always ended up overwhelming the revenue we brought in."

The company cited the recent shift in the VR market and broader headwinds in gaming as factors that made the path to profitability too difficult to continue pursuing. The decision to shut down now, rather than later, was framed as a choice made while the team still had the ability to wind things down carefully.

New account creation has already been disabled. Token rewards have ended. The Rec Room + subscription program is no longer accepting new members, though existing subscribers will have their memberships extended through June 1. After May 1, token purchases will stop. After May 18, creators will no longer be able to earn tokens.

A final creator payout will be processed on June 1.

For players, the company is offering tools to download photos and a personal memento called a "final report card." For creators, working room copies cannot be exported since the rooms depend on Rec Room's servers. Room and invention data can be downloaded in formats that allow reconstruction elsewhere, but only through the Steam PC build.

The announcement closed with a line the team attributed to a longtime collaborator: Rec Room was "an explosion of love and creativity all around the world."

The servers go offline in 63 days.
