OpenAI's ChatGPT Translate Challenges Google With Style Presets — But PDFs Are Still a No-Go

ChatGPT Translate interface showing style presets like 'business formal'

OpenAI just threw a curveball at Google Translate with a new AI-powered tool that can make your translations sound 'academic' or 'business formal' — but don't get ahead of yourself, it can't handle PDFs yet.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Translate, a standalone web translation tool supporting over 50 languages. The service offers style presets for translations, including an example listed on the homepage:

Translate this and make it more business formal.

Unlike Google Translate, image/document upload support is not yet available; current text-only translation on desktop and text/microphone input on mobile. No app version exists for iOS or Android, unlike Google Translate. The tool reuses existing translation features from the ChatGPT chatbot interface.

Speculation about the AI model source suggests it could be based on GPT-4, though OpenAI has not confirmed this.
