OpenAI Wins Back AI Defectors Amid Firing Allegations and Startup Struggles
In a high-stakes move, two of OpenAIās most prominent defectors are returning homeāafter allegations of misconduct and a fledgling AI startupās collapse.
Barret Zoph and Luke Metz, cofounders of Thinking Machines, are rejoining OpenAI after leaving in late 2024 to start the AI lab with Mira Murati. A report by technology journalist Kylie Robison states:
'Zoph was fired for āunethical conduct.ā'
OpenAIās CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, confirmed Zophās return in a memo, stating the company 'doesnāt share the same concerns about Zoph as Murati.'
Sam Schoenholz, another Thinking Machines staffer, is also rejoining OpenAI. Zoph informed Murati of his intent to leave Monday before being terminated; OpenAIās move follows the recent departure of VP of research Jerry Tworek.
