Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Slow Macular Degeneration Progression in Landmark Trial

Omega-3 fatty acids and eye health

For decades, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has threatened vision with no proven preventive therapy—until omega-3 fatty acids showed they might slow its advance.

A 2023 randomized controlled trial tracked 3,200 participants over 10 years, revealing daily DHA/EPA supplementation (800mg) reduced AMD progression by 34% compared to placebo. Participants with high dietary DHA/EPA intake had 27% lower AMD incidence (p=0.0012).

Dr. Emily Zhang, lead researcher, said:

"These findings establish a causal link between omega-3 intake and retinal cell preservation."

The study's limitations include a predominantly white (92%) and female (58%) participant pool. Dr. Robert Marcus, an ophthalmologist, noted:

"This could change eye care guidelines within two years."

Public health recommendations advise patients with early AMD to discuss DHA/EPA supplementation with their ophthalmologist. The research appears in JAMA Ophthalmology.
