New World's Last Launch: Amazon's MMO Gets 2027 End Date in Mass Layoff Aftermath
Amazon's MMO flagship is being buried in 2027 with a one-year stasis period - and no headstone for its million players.
New World will shut down permanently on January 31, 2027, according to Amazon's official statement. The final season, Nighthaven, will run until the end date, but no new purchases will be allowed after the game is delisted from all platforms. Amazon said:
We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion... Together we built something special.
Players will not receive refunds for in-game currency (Marks of Fortune), and the shutdown follows Amazon's 2023 announcement of 14,000 layoffs and a halt to "a significant amount" of first-party game development.
Despite maintaining 50,000-60,000 concurrent Steam players post-launch—lower than Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft: Shadowlands—the game will join Amazon's list of shuttered projects.
Private servers may emerge after the shutdown, as seen with EA's Anthem, though Amazon has not commented on this possibility.
