Meta’s Big Nuclear Gamble: Powering AI with Sodium Reactors and Sam Altman’s Startup
Meta is securing 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2035 to fuel its AI infrastructure and Prometheus supercluster in Ohio through three agreements with energy startups.
The largest partnership involves TerraPower’s sodium-cooled "Natrium" reactors, which will deliver 690 megawatts by 2032 and 2.1 gigawatts by 2035.
Oklo will supply 1.2 gigawatts by 2030, with Meta claiming the deal could create thousands of construction and operations jobs in Ohio. Vistra’s agreement preserves existing nuclear plants and adds 433 megawatts of capacity at sites in Ohio and Pennsylvania by the early 2030s.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman owns 4% of Oklo, a key partner in Meta’s nuclear strategy. The agreements aim to align Meta’s AI energy demands with long-term infrastructure goals, leveraging advanced reactor designs and regional job creation commitments.
