iRobot’s New US Subsidiary Aims to Keep Your Data Safe from China-Based Owner

iRobot creates US subsidiary iRobot Safe to separate data from China-based owner Picea Robotics, following bankruptcy and failed Amazon acquisition.

Your Roomba’s map of your home might now be guarded by a new US-only subsidiary, not the Chinese company that bought iRobot.

iRobot is creating a US-based subsidiary, iRobot Safe, to handle data for US Roomba customers following its acquisition by China-based Picea Robotics.

The subsidiary will have its own board, CEO, and data security officer, mirroring the TikTok deal structure. iRobot filed for bankruptcy in December 2024 after a failed Amazon acquisition attempt in 2023.

iRobot noted: "designed to maintain a clear separation between iRobot’s non-US ownership and its US and other global consumer data." Picea Robotics now wholly owns iRobot, which remains headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts.
