House Defies Trump, Advances Affordable Care Subsidies Extension
A bipartisan rebellion in the US House has reignited the fight to preserve health care subsidies for millions, defying both party leadership and presidential opposition. Lawmakers voted to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies for three years after a revolt that saw 17 Republicans join Democrats to override House leadership using a discharge petition. The subsidies, which expired January 1, 2026, would have caused premium hikes for 22 million Americans.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the extension would cost $81 billion over 10 years, with 8 million additional people insured by 2029. House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the stakes: "The affordability crisis is not a hoax. It is very real despite what Donald Trump has had to say."

The Senate remains uncertain, as previous efforts to pass the extension failed to meet the 60-vote threshold in December 2025. Negotiations are ongoing for a narrower compromise with a shorter extension and tighter income limits.
