Google’s Pixel Launcher Gets a Quick Launch Makeover—But It’s Not Fast Enough
Google’s latest tweak to Pixel Launcher feels less like innovation and more like backtracking—again.
The update replaces the unified search feature with Google Search on home screens, removing the ability to search for apps and contacts directly. However, a new quick launch feature allows users to type in the app drawer after swiping up and open apps directly by pressing the Enter key, bypassing web searches.
This change is rolling out via a staged Google Play Services update and is currently active on the Pixel 8 Pro with Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1.
Pixel Search remains available as an alternative for unified search. Third-party launchers like Niagara and Lawnchair have offered similar keyboard-first workflows for years, making Google’s update feel like a belated catch-up.
The staged rollout suggests the feature is still in testing, with no immediate plans to expand to other devices.
"This tiny tweak ensures you can search and launch an app without taking your fingers off the keyboard," one user noted. Another added, "Quick launch at least helps restore some of that speed and efficiency."
