Google’s AI Inbox: Your New Personal Assistant—Or Just Another Overwhelm?
Google wants you to forget about your inbox as a to-do list—and that might be a good thing
Google is testing an AI Inbox for Gmail that replaces traditional email lists with personalized task suggestions and topic summaries. The system aims to simplify email overload by surfacing actionable items like dentist appointment reminders or plumber quote requests. However, the lack of task limits raises concerns about creating "infinite to-do lists."
Gmail’s Blake Barnes noted:
"We’re not yet tracking completion. There’s no limit to the number of to-dos Gmail might suggest."
The free version offers AI replies, thread summaries, and writing help. Paid tiers ($19.99-$249.99/month) add grammar checks and search-result overviews. Microsoft and Apple have similar AI email tools, but Google’s approach emphasizes proactive task management over passive sorting.
