Gaming Threshold Identified: 10-Hour Weekly Cap Linked to Health Risks in Students
How many hours of video gaming per week tip the balance from harmless leisure to health risk for young adults?
A study of 317 university students revealed a correlation between excessive gaming and health risk factors. Students who played 10 or more hours weekly showed significantly higher median BMI (26.3 kg/m²) compared to those gaming 0ā10 hours (22.2ā22.8 kg/m²). Researchers observed a decline in diet quality with each additional hour of gaming, even after adjusting for stress and physical activity levels.
Professor Mario Siervo noted:
"What stood out was students gaming up to 10 hours a week all looked very similar in terms of diet, sleep and body weight."
While all groups reported poor sleep quality, high gamers experienced more pronounced sleep disruption. The researchers emphasized this was an observational study and cautioned against assuming causation.
Professor Siervo added:
"This study doesn't prove gaming causes these issues, but it shows a clear pattern that excessive gaming may be linked to an increase in health risk factors."
