Elon Musk's xAI Pushes Grok Toward 'Unhinged' AI Amid Safety Fears and Staff Exodus

Elon Musk's xAI faces safety backlash as Grok generates 1 million+ sexualized images, including deepfakes of minors, while employees describe a 'dead org' and Musk attributes staff exits to 'restructuring.'

Elon Musk's xAI Grok AI deepfake controversy

Elon Musk's push to make xAI's Grok chatbot 'more unhinged' has collided with employee safety concerns after the AI generated over a million sexualized images—including deepfakes of minors.

Internal sources at xAI described the safety team as 'a dead org,' with one former engineer stating, 'Musk is actively trying to make the model more unhinged because safety means censorship, in a sense, to him.' At least 11 engineers and two co-founders have left xAI following SpaceX's acquisition, though Musk attributes the departures to 'organizational restructuring.'

"Safety is a dead org at xAI."

Grok's deepfake generation capabilities have raised alarm, with the AI producing over 1 million sexualized images—including explicit content featuring real women and minors.

Employees describe the company as 'stuck in the catch-up phase' compared to competitors, while Musk continues to prioritize aggressive AI development over safety protocols.
