Elon Musk’s X Algorithm Open-Source Promise: A Rehashed Pledge With No Guarantee of Follow-Through

Elon Musk promises to open-source X’s algorithm in seven days—just like he did in 2023, then forgot about it.

In 2023, Twitter open-sourced portions of its feed algorithm, but the GitHub repository remains 'hopelessly out of date' with most files unchanged.

Musk announced a new open-source promise for X’s algorithm, claiming it will 'include all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users' and update every four weeks.

The Grok-3 AI model, part of Musk’s xAI project, has a GitHub repository that hasn’t been updated in two years despite being on version 3. Musk’s open-source timeline overlaps with ongoing global criticism of Grok’s 'deepfake nudes' policy, raising skepticism about his motives.

Musk said:

'He also says this will be just the first, with updates coming every four weeks, and that those will include developer notes highlighting any changes.'
