EB Games NZ Shuts Down 38 Stores Amid Multi-Million Loss—Digital Future Looms

EB Games store sign with closed shutter

The bricks-and-mortar game is over for EB Games in New Zealand. Here’s how a 25-year-old retailer lost its grip.

EB Games will shut all 38 New Zealand stores by end of January 2024 following "multi-million dollar losses".

Managing director Shane Stockwell said "significant and repeated efforts to turn the business around" failed. The distribution center closes Feb 28; ebgames.com.au access for NZ customers delayed until March 2026.

Third-party proposals to sustain the business "did not present any solutions" (Stockwell). Australia retains 336 stores but closed 20 outlets in 2020; pivoting to pop culture merch and retro gaming trade-ins.
