DIY Remaster: How PC Nerds Are Reviving Prince of Persia Without Ubisoft

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remastered textures and Steam Deck compatibility patch

Ubisoft has canceled the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake due to financial restructuring and a shift toward live service games. PC modders are now leading the charge to modernize the 2003 classic through two primary methods: the Fix Compilation and the Sands of Time Remastered project.

The Fix Compilation—a community patch—addresses core technical issues like resolution scaling, mouse acceleration, and controller support. For texture upgrades, modders recommend the Sands of Time Remastered mod, which replaces outdated assets while preserving original gameplay mechanics. Both options require manual installation but avoid the need for an official re-release.

Steam Deck users face additional hurdles due to the game’s legacy DRM. A workaround involves stripping out Ubisoft Connect protections using third-party tools and transferring the game via KDE Connect.

As one modder explained: "If you've got the Steam or Ubisoft versions, it strips out the old DRM, allowing for you to pack it up and transfer it to your handheld PC of choice." GOG’s Preservation Program is also working on a modernized version of the game, though no timeline has been announced.
