A reboot of the 1978 British sci-fi cult classic 'Blake’s 7' is in development under Multitude Productions, the production company launched by The Last of Us director Peter Hoar.

The original series, which aired from 1978 to 1981, followed a group of resistance fighters opposing a totalitarian space federation across 52 episodes with a rotating cast. Hoar described the reboot’s potential by comparing it to the Andor series, emphasizing that success in the genre can stem from “integrity, wit and sophistication” rather than budget size.

According to historical records, the original series was produced under significant financial constraints, occupying a time slot originally intended for the UK police drama Softly, Softly.

As Hoar noted, “The ‘Blake’s 7’ story is legendary because they were given the 70s UK police show ‘Softly, Softly’ slot that was intended for police drama with a budget intended for one big set and a few location shoots.” This low-budget approach, combined with its serialized narrative structure, has influenced modern space-themed storytelling.

Producer Bouch highlighted the reboot’s strategy to merge “British low-budget sensibility” with international market demands, addressing industry-wide cost constraints.

The original series’ legacy as a narrative model for serialized resistance movements remains a focal point for the reboot’s development.
