AWS Debuts Zero-Touch IoT Setup: Scan a QR Code, Done

Imagine setting up your smart home devices with a single QR code scan instead of fumbling through menus—AWS just made that reality for IoT developers.

AWS IoT Device Management now supports Wi-Fi Simple Setup (WSS) for managed integrations, enabling QR code-based device provisioning. The feature reduces manual setup time and technical support needs by automating Wi-Fi credential transfer.

Users scan a QR code with a solution provider's app to connect devices to a hidden network, after which pre-stored Wi-Fi credentials are securely transmitted during onboarding.

"The new device discovers and connects to a hidden network broadcasted by the IoT hub," notes AWS documentation. This workflow creates a "near zero-touch experience for end users," according to the same documentation. The service is available in Canada (Central) and Europe (Ireland) regions.
