AR Patent Wars Heat Up as Xreal Sues Viture Over Glasses Tech

AR glasses in a courtroom setting

The AR glasses market is getting so hot, it’s starting to smoke—literally.

Xreal has filed a patent lawsuit in the United States against Viture, alleging infringement of US Patent No. 11,988,839.

The patent covers optical technology for augmented reality glasses. Viture’s accused products include the Viture Pro, Luma Pro, and Luma Ultra models.

A German court previously issued a preliminary injunction against Viture in the same dispute, blocking sales in nine EU countries.

Patent battles in the smart glasses industry are intensifying as the market matures. Meta faces two ongoing lawsuits—one over gesture control technology and another involving AI systems—while IngenioSpec has filed multiple cases at the U.S. International Trade Commission targeting several firms.

Analysts Anshel Sag and Avi Greengart note that these legal disputes reflect the high stakes of controlling the next computing platform. Sag explained:

"This doesn’t really fit the patent troll model because these are two competitors that both have products in market. You get patent trolls all the time… but this doesn’t really fit that because these are two competitors that both have products in market."

As XR startups and smart glasses rivals jockey for position, patent enforcement is becoming a key battleground for market dominance.
