Apple Bets on Google’s AI to Revive Siri—A Year After Admitting It Wasn’t Going to Work
Apple’s AI struggles led to a strategic pivot: partnering with Google to power a more capable Siri—despite Tim Cook’s earlier claims about integrating multiple AI companies.
Apple confirmed the collaboration in a statement to CNBC:
"After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users."
The shift follows a 2023 delay for Apple’s AI-upgraded Siri, which the company admitted was taking "longer than we thought." Apple’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, stepped down after setbacks, accelerating the need for external expertise.
While Google now leads the partnership, Apple previously explored collaborations with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity. The personalized Siri powered by Google’s Gemini is expected to launch this year, contrasting with Google’s own Gemini capabilities already in production.
